The Waterside Partnership

The Waterside Partnership is a collective of landowners and businesses who have called Waterside and the Solent their home for generations, drawing on the knowledge and experience of our local authorities and community partners to deliver development that contributes to a better future for everyone.

Who are we?

Associated British Ports (ABP) is a port operator that manages 21 ports across the UK. The company contributes £15 billion to the UK economy, supports over 200,000 jobs and handles 90 million tonnes of cargo.

Its core focus remains Keeping Britain Trading and has recently launched a twin mission, Enabling the Energy Transition. 

The Barker-Mill Estates comprise several thousand acres of land in Hampshire. The land consists of farmland, grazing paddocks and commercial land units, alongside residential rental properties.

The Barker-Mill family have deep and long-established roots in the county having been local landowners and prominent figures in community life for more than 500 years.

The Fawley Waterside site was once home to one of the largest oil-fired power stations in the UK.

Fawley Waterside was acquired by well-established London-based investment firm Long Harbour in 2015 and is a strategically important location at the southern end of the Waterside area.

ExxonMobil is committed to producing the energy and chemical products that are essential to modern life, economic development and improved standards of living. In doing this, it is also committed to protecting its people, the environment and the well-being of communities in which it operates.

Owners and operators of the Fawley refinery, representing around 20% of UK capacity, the refinery supplies fuel directly to critical international airports including Birmingham, Heathrow and Gatwick.

Solent Gateway is the UK’s only combined military and commercial port, with plans to deliver commercial space and utilise existing infrastructure and deep-water dock capacity.

Solent Gateway is wholly owned by Associated British Ports. The company was formed in 2016 and holds the 35-year lease until 2051 to develop and operate the 83-hectare Marchwood Port on the River Test.

The Solent Freeport is a major opportunity for the UK as it seeks to strengthen its trading position and develop new trading relationships. Freeports are areas designated by the government that will benefit from incentives to encourage economic activity. The Solent’s location makes it the UK’s most important gateway to European and global markets.

The Solent Freeport aims to support innovative green industries, encouraging growth in the hydrogen economy, wind turbine manufacturing and ultra-low-sulphur diesel.

Our Partners

Hampshire County Council is responsible for a wide range of services across the whole county.

The County Council’s role is to act strategically and implement policy as determined by Cabinet. This means delivering services to the people of Hampshire in an open and cost-effective way.

New Forest District Council is responsible for an area of 260 sq. miles delivering a range of services to the 176,500 residents who live there.

It is committed to improving the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the district as well as playing a leading role in the forest’s future, working closely with the community and in partnership with others to enhance the quality of lives of present and future generations.
